THE KEYS TO BECOMING A MAKE-SPECIFIC MECHANIC
Everybody knows the workday goes faster and is more pleasurable when you enjoy what you do. For some people, however, the job crosses from likeable career to full blown passion. If you love working in the automotive repair industry and obsess over your favorite make of car, you can actually focus your career around that passion. At that point, is your work really work? That’s an interesting question, but it really needs no answer. It’s great if you love what you do and can provide a specialized service to your customers.
At Holland Car Care in San Mateo, California, we’ve been servicing and repairing all makes and models since 1974, but we indeed cater to owners of certain vehicles such as those made in Germany. Come see what we do. Perhaps you’ll even join our team one day.
MANY CAREER CHOICES IN A SINGLE INDUSTRY
There are many ways to share your love of cars with the people who need them repaired. You can help people with car service/repair by working at an independently owned shop, a franchised location, a dealership, or a body/collision repair facility. Each of these includes a variety of specific positions. For instance, in addition to working as a technician/mechanic, you can serve in a service writing role, department manager, collision repair specialist, or another role. You can even focus on particular aspects within each of these positions.
For example, instead of offering general services, you may focus on a particular system such as air conditioning, brakes, transmissions, or wheels. Also, you have the option of narrowing your scope of body work, too (painting, dent-pulling, etc.). If you’re not interested in performing the manual tasks of auto repair, you can still find a place within the industry. Opportunities exist at insurance companies, schools, parts stores, distributors, and manufacturers. That’s surely the definition of workplace happiness–helping others while enjoying the tasks you perform.
LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES, INCLUDING THOSE SPECIFIC TO YOUR FAVORITE AUTO LINE
When you’re passionate about working on vehicles, there are many ways to prepare yourself. Depending on which niche you choose, your education may range from training while you work to pursuing an advanced degree. One possible option is ASE certification, a combination of experience, education, and demonstrated mastery. There are various certifications available. Further, you can work with more experienced peers as well as attend specialized trainings, courses, or schools to pursue your knowledge of specific vehicles. For example, you might focus on domestic or import autos. You could opt to narrow that focus to German cars or even just work on a single brand. Regardless of your favorite line, make Holland Car Care your favorite repair shop.
