THE HISTORY OF JAGUAR
Most of us are familiar with the jaguar, the gorgeous spotted cat native to the Americas. With a lightning fast running speed of 50 miles per hour, a muscular build, and long life span even in the wild, this is no ordinary domestic housecat. Similarly, the Jaguar automobile is no ordinary car. Even among other popular makes, it’s special. To keep yours purring along at its very best, schedule an appointment with Holland Car Care in San Mateo, California, for all your Jaguar service and repair needs.
A CAR MANUFACTURER IS BORN
Although it would be several decades before being called Jaguar, the line began in 1922 when William Lyons and Williams Walmsley started Swallow Sidecar Company, running it until 1934 when Lyons bought out his partner and changed the name to S.S. Cars Limited. In 1935, several sports models bearing the name S.S. Jaguar were released. Citing concerns about being confused with the politically charged S.S. designation, Lyons dropped the letters, calling his company simply Jaguar Cars Limited in 1945. Not only did the branding work, but the line gained enormous popularity in the next decade. Drivers loved the sleek design and top-of-the-line features. Even through steel shortages, the company managed to deliver for customers.
A WALK DOWN THE TIMELINE
After the stresses of the Great Depression followed by World War II, enthusiasts began craving the Jaguar late in the 1940’s decade. The company also helped itself by responding well to customers. This placed the manufacturer in prime position in the 1950’s with no competitors who offered sports/luxury combination. When obtaining steel became an issue in the 1960’s, Jaguar merged with British Motor Holdings (BMH) in 1965, taking that company’s name. Dependent on its identity, the car line lost popularity. Fortunately, BMH recognized this and allowed Jaguar to operate as its own company. Renewing strong production efforts, Sir John Egan’s decisions and management boosted the company in the 1980’s. Jaguar became a part of Ford (Premier Auto Group) in 1999, but was sold along with Land Rover early in this century. The new owners have kept the two lines together and strong since then.
